Kevin Costner’s wife Christine Baumgartner filed for divorce on May 1st, and the following day Costner filed his response after 18 years of marriage.
Baumgartner cited “irreconcilable differences” in her petition for the divorce. Costner’s rep told TMZ, “It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action. We ask that his, Christine’s and their children’s privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time.”
The pair share three children, sons Cayden, 15, and Hayes, 14, and daughter Grace, 12. Costner has four other children three of whom he shares with his ex-wife Cindy Silva and with a former girlfriend Bridget Rooney.
The pair has a prenup, and Baumgartner is asking for joint custody, which it appears by Costner’s response is something they agree on.
Costner has had great success of late in his leading role in the series “Yellowstone”. There have been reports of behind the scene drama questioning if the series may have to end earlier than expected over disagreements with Kevin Costner over shooting schedules. Deadline reported the series will end after season 5.
Costner was apprehensive to marry Baumgartner in the beginning and told Us Weekly, “Finally, there came a moment where maybe this doesn’t go forward,” Costner recalled. “Because I thought to myself, I could be divorced again, but what I couldn’t be is divorced again with children. That crushed me. I had to kind of face life and go, ‘Are you gonna miss life, are you gonna miss love because you’re afraid?’ And the answer finally came back, ‘I’m not gonna lose her because I’m gonna be afraid.’”
Unfortunately, it seems Costner’s fears have come to fruition.
