The federal government is now taking action and sending a FEMA team out to East Palestine, two weeks after the train derailment. The announcement came after former President and presidential candidate Donald Trump shared he would be visiting the area.
Trump speculated that the change in action was because of his announcement.
“Biden and FEMA said they would not be sending federal aid to East Palestine. As soon as I announced that I’m going, he announced a team will go. Hopefully he will also be there. This is good news because we got them to “move.” The people of East Palestine need help. I’ll see you on Wednesday!”
Governor of Ohio Mike DeWine stated the move came after further discussions with the agency. DeWine had told the local residents to evacuate the area when Norfolk Southern decided to release harmful chemicals from the train in order to prevent an explosion.
DeWine then told those residents a couple of days later it was safe to come home. people have been getting sick and livestock and animals have been dying in the area around East Palestine.
The derailment seemed to be ignored in the media for the most part but has continued to get attention on social media. Pictures and videos of dead animals as well as dead fish in the river as well as videos of the controlled release of vinyl chloride.
DeWine had previously shared that the incident didn’t qualify for FEMA assistance as the derailment does not meet the legal requirements for a declaration of FEMA disaster.
The Biden administration had said, “What East Palestine needs is much more expansive than what FEMA can provide. FEMA is on the front lines when there is a hurricane or tornado. This situation is different.”
During a town meeting at a local high school, residents were expecting to have a Q and A session with Norfolk Southern officials. Norfolk Southern pulled out at the last minute citing physical safety as they know residents are upset with the situation.
Whatever prompted this action, the people of East Palsine need help.
