Gordon Lightfoot, the Canadian folk-rock icon known for such hits as “If You Could Read My Mind” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” died on Monday night at a Toronto hospital. He was 84.
Lightfoot’s death was confirmed by his publicist, Victoria Lord. The cause of death was unclear as of last check.
Lightfoot was born in Orillia, Ontario, in 1938. He began his music career in the early 1960s, and quickly became one of Canada’s most popular and successful artists. His songs were known for their evocative lyrics and melodic compositions, and he won numerous awards for his work, including five Grammy nominations and 17 Juno Awards.
Lightfoot’s biggest hit was “If You Could Read My Mind,” which was released in 1965. The song reached number one on the charts in both Canada and the United States, and it remains one of his most popular songs to this day.
Other hit songs by Lightfoot include “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” “Sundown,” “Carefree Highway,” and “Rainy Day People.” He also wrote songs for other artists, including Peter, Paul and Mary and Marty Robbins.
Lightfoot continued to perform and record music well into his later years.
