Maryland Sen Announces That He Won’t Seek Re-Election Leading to Speculation That Trump Hater Jamie Raskin Could Run for His Seat

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) announced today that he won’t seek re-election in 2024 leading to speculation that U.S. House Rep Jamie Raskin (D-MD) could run for his seat.

Cardin has held his Senate seat since 2007, a stretch of three terms, after spending two decades in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Raskin trended on Twitter following the news as many on the left expressed their desire for him to run for the seat.

U.S. Sen Chris Van Hollen occupies the other Maryland Senate seat and he won his first term just as Raskin was entering Congress in 2017.

Prior to his first term in the U.S. House, Raskin served in the Maryland State Senate for a decade and he became one of the main faces of the opposition to former President Donald Trump in the House.

Raskin issued a statement about Cardin’s retirement as he said, “I’m saluting Senator Ben Cardin for a remarkable career serving our people from Annapolis to Washington.”

“Senator Cardin, Marylanders thank you and wish you and Myrna a wonderful retirement,” Raskin added in a tweet.

Raskin recently announced that he is now in remission after undergoing chemotherapy treatments following his lymphoma diagnosis in December.

National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson Tate Mitchell said in a statement that Cardin retired because he didn’t want to face Republicans likely being in the Senate majority again following the 2024 elections.

Mitchell said, “Democrats are quickly realizing that the Senate won’t be any fun for them when Republicans retake the majority in 2024.”
