The Plot Thickens as DOJ Notifies Fox News of Criminal Investigation Investigation into Leaked Tucker Carlson Clips

The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into the leaked behind-the-scenes footage of Tucker Carlson. This news was made public after a letter was sent from the DOJ to Fox Corporation earlier this week.

The DOJ notified Fox News Thursday, that it “presently views Fox Corporation as one of the potential victim-witnesses of the alleged criminal conduct under investigation.”

U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Trezevant sent the notice of the investigation. They wrote in part, “This letter is to advise you that the United States is investigating allegations of criminal wrongdoing involving intentional unauthorized access of a computer … intentional interception and disclosure of wire, oral, or electronic communication … conspiracy … and other federal criminal statutes.”

The letter to Fox News disclosed that the criminal probe is connected to the leaked videos published by Media Matters and a video posted by Vice News which showed unaired footage of Carlson’s interview with Kanye West in October of 2022.

The Tampa Bay Times reported on the investigation on Friday. They also reported that the FBI had executed a search warrant on the home of Timothy Burke, a former journalist for Deadspin who now operates his own media consulting firm in connection to the investigation.

Mark Rasch, attorney for Burke, confirmed that the FBI had executed a search warrant on Burke’s home. Rasch also stated that his client denies any criminal wrongdoing and added he has not yet seen an affidavit in support of the FBI’s search warrant.

Fox News had issued a cease and desist order to Media Matters after multiple videos were released from behind the scene of Tucker Carlson Tonight. This notice seemed to have stopped the videos from being released.

Tucker Carlson’s lawyer sent a letter to Fox News earlier this month. The letter accused Fox News of fraud as well as breach of contract. The letter blamed Fox News for leaking Carlson’s private communications to the media. The letter also instructed Fox News to “preserve all existing documents and data” relevant to Fox’s relationship with Carlson, including correspondence between top executives and several media outlets.

The revelation of the DOJ’s investigation adds another layer to the controversial ousting of Tucker Carlson. We will see what information comes from the investigation.
