China confirms the number of novel coronavirus cases is 5,974. This number was updated today. This is the most recent report that we are aware of and appears to the the most accurate account of confirmed cases in China. This is a jump from the last report from China which confirmed 4,515 which is a 1,400 incline of confirmed cases in one day.
A U.S. State Department official told the Associated Press that the chartered plane sent to China to pick up Americans in the city of Wuhan has departed and is en route to the US. This is according to USNews, the official shared this information anonymously as they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. The plane will stop in Anchorage, AK, the passengers will then be screened and treated if need be. The plane is then set to head to Ontario, CA.
Currently, there are reported cases of the Novel Coronavirus on all inhabitable continents. With Africa reporting their first possible case Monday. According to the NYTimes:
“Thailand has reported 14 cases of infection; Hong Kong has eight; the United States, Taiwan, Australia and Macau have five each; Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia each have reported four; Japan has seven; France has four; Canada has three; Vietnam has two; and Nepal, Cambodia and Germany each have one. There have been no deaths outside China.”
Passenger screening at airports has now expanded to 20 airports in the United States. As of yesterday, the CDC confirmed 5 cases of the novel coronavirus in the US and currently monitoring 110 possible cases across 26 states.
Bloomberg reported “The number of infected cases in mainland China soared to 5,974, the National Health Commission said Wednesday. That’s more than the 5,327 cases officially reported in the country during in the SARS epidemic 17 years ago.
The death toll climbed to 132, with most of the cases in Hubei, the epicenter of the outbreak. The province added 25 fatalities on Wednesday. Almost 60,000 patients are under observations, the NHC said, double the number from earlier in the week.”
