Adam Schiff Attempts to Dismiss Memo Sent By Trump as Unserious While Downplaying Magnitude of Request to Testify

House Jan. 6 Select Committee member Adam Schiff (D-CA) today attempted to dismiss a memo sent by former President Donald Trump in response to the committee’s request.

Schiff also downplayed the magnitude of requesting that Trump testifies before the committee by claiming that seven presidents have testified before Congress before.

What Schiff didn’t mention, however, is that none of the others were doing so during an investigation that ultimately centered around their alleged actions while in office.

Schiff declared in a tweet, “Trump’s unsworn ‘statement’ about the work of @January6thCmte is not a substitute for testimony under oath.”

“We await a serious response from the former president. Seven previous presidents have honored their responsibility to appear before Congress. Trump should do the same,” Schiff insisted.

As The Hill reported, Schiff’s fellow committee member, Jamie Raskin (D-MD), told CNN’s Jake Tapper there would be “nothing really extraordinary” about Trump’s testimony.

Raskin pointed out that former presidents as long ago as John Quincy Adams and John Tyler testified before Congress.

“Seven former presidents have come forward to testify in American history, two of them by subpoena,” Raskin noted.

Following the vote from the committee yesterday, Schiff issued a pair of tweets where he demanded that Trump “needs to testify.”

“Donald Trump knew that his claims of election fraud were completely bogus. His own top Justice Department officials told him so. His response was to tell DOJ to just say the election was corrupt and he and the Republicans would do the rest. Trump needs to testify.”

“When Trump summoned the mob on January 6, he knew they were armed and dangerous. The Secret Service told him so. His response was to tell them to take the metal detectors down. He didn’t care if they were armed — they weren’t there to hurt him. Trump needs to testify.”
