Alec Baldwin Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter in the ‘Rust’ Shooting Death of Halyna Hutchins

After an announcement yesterday that charges might be forthcoming, New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies and special prosecutor Andrea Reeb announced that actor Alec Baldwin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the “Rust” death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who loaded the gun has also issued the same charges, bringing a conclusion to an investigation that dragged on for more than a year.

The charges were announced nearly 15 months after Baldwin fired the live round from his prop gun and he has denied that he pulled the trigger in a subsequent interview.

The FBI disputed Baldwin’s assertions as they insisted that in order for the revolver to fire, the trigger would have been pulled.

In August 2022, Gutierrez-Reed lashed out at the police and accused them of mishandling the matter almost from the start.

The following month, Mary Carmack-Altwies announced that four individuals will be prosecuted for the shooting death.

Heather Brewer, the spokesperson for the office of the First Judicial District Attorney announced in an October 2022 email that Carmack-Altwies “received the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s investigative report on the Rust movie set incident.”

In yesterday’s statement, Brewer said that “Regardless of the District Attorney’s decision, the announcement will be a solemn occasion, made in a manner keeping with the office’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the judicial process and respecting the victim’s family.”
