The Texas GOP Chairman and sometimes controversial Allen West has resigned from his post today. He does plan to remain, chairman, until his replacement is picked on July 11th.
West says it is time to “reflect on a new chapter” in his life. “It has been my distinct honor to serve as Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. I pray Godspeed for this governing body,” West said. Friday morning he said he was submitting an “irrevocable resignation”.
Clearly, there are some issues with West and the Texas GOP. The GOP that claims to be for and panders to minorities all the time can’t even keep West, a Black man, in his post apparently. That may have something to do with the fact that West, unlike many Republicans in the weak Texas GOP, is historically known as a good Conservative.
The retired Army lieutenant colonel was elected last year amid Covid-19 lockdown pushback from Texas Republican voters, not to be mistaken for Texas Republican leadership. Texas Republicans like U.S. House Rep Dan Crenshaw and Governor Gregg Abbott have been weak on almost everything, ceding ground to angry voters on issues that matter to them most only when all other options seem exhausted.
Crenshaw for example has promoted the idea of ‘Red Flag’ gun confiscation laws, while Abbott and the former have both taken weak positions on Confederate monument destruction by radical leftists. A state like Texas one might think would be a little tougher than to allow monuments to be taken down to appease the politically correct.
West has taken heat for being different. He has suggested for example, that Texas could potentially secede from the nation and become a conservative mecca of sorts in western civilization. That will likely not happen. As it stands now, Texas can’t even control the flow of illegal immigrants coming across their own border with Mexico. It’s doubtful they’ll even be a Republican state ten years from now, sadly.
It seems to us that the RINOs in the GOP Swamp in Texas couldn’t handle West and likely pushed him out. CNN reported in part:
West protested last fall with other prominent conservatives against [sic] the Abbott’s Covid-19 restrictions and mask mandate and sued the governor for extending early voting amid the pandemic. Abbott plans to run for reelection in 2022 and already faces a GOP primary, but has Trump’s backing for a third term. In an interview with CNN’s Ed Lavandera last week, West did not rule out a possible run for governor.
Travis County GOP Chair Matt Mackowiak accused West of using his tenure to “provide him a platform for his political future, not an opportunity to build the party.”
“Allen West has always been all about himself, leaving disaster in his wake,” Mackowiak wrote on Twitter, claiming that West inherited a strong party from former Texas GOP chairs that is now “in the weakest financial position in at least 10 years.”
Time will tell what comes next, or if West does indeed run for Governor of Texas.
