AOC Countersignals Pelosi, Says Republicans Not to Blame For Eviction Moratorium Expiring

The Associate Press reported that anger and frustration mounted in Congress over the weekend as a nationwide eviction moratorium expired during a surge in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bulk of that anger appears to be coming from progressives including U.S. House Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” and countersignaled House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who said Republicans were to blame.

Ocasio-Cortez told Jake Tapper today, “The House had the opportunity to extend the eviction moratorium. But, there were a handful of conservative Democrats who chose to leave rather than keep families in their homes.”

“We cannot in good faith blame Republicans when House Democrats have a majority,” Ocasio-Cortez insisted.

That message runs counter to a three part tweet put out by Pelosi last night. Pelosi claimed, “Ensuring every American has a roof overhead is a value that unites the Democratic Party. That’s why I led a relentless campaign to extend the CDC eviction moratorium. In an act of pure cruelty, Republicans blocked this measure — leaving children and families out on the streets.”

“In the face of this partisan obstruction, @HouseDemocrats join @POTUS in urging state and local governments to immediately disburse the $46.5 billion in emergency rental assistance approved by the Democratic Congress, so that many families can avoid eviction,” Pelosi continued.

Pelosi concluded, “Democrats believe in safe and affordable housing for all as the country recovers from the pandemic and we #BuildBackBetter. The Biden-Harris Admin and @HouseDemocrats will continue to search for solutions to protect vulnerable renters from eviction during this crisis.”

Many respondents were unconvinced that Pelosi offered her best effort. Verified Twitter user Jackie Fielder responded, “Nancy, don’t pin this on just Republicans. We exercise our vote so you can exercise your vote on behalf of us. Call the eviction moratorium to a vote. Reconvene Congress.”

U.S. House Rep Cori Bush (D-MO) has been holding a protest on the Capitol steps and tweeted out early this morning, “It’s 2 AM on Sunday. We haven’t slept since Thursday night. The eviction moratorium expired, so we’re now in an eviction emergency. 11 million are now at risk of losing their homes at any moment. The House needs to reconvene and put an end to this crisis.”
