Bad News for NC Dems as Legislator Tricia Cotham Looks to Switch to GOP, Potentially Giving Republicans Supermajority

Democrats are calling for the resignation of NC State Rep. Tricia Cotham (D-NC112) as speculation grows that she will be switching from Democrat to Republican.

Cotham’s move to the Republican party would give Republicans a super majority in the state legislature, this has many Democrats bent out of shape.

The Calvin Coolidge Project shared the news on Twitter:

“Report: NC Democratic lawmaker Tricia Cotham is believed to switch her party affiliation to Republican. This will hand NC Republicans a legislative supermajority with the votes to override Dem Governor Roy Cooper mid-legislative session.”

NC House Minority Leader Robert Reives (D) isn’t too happy with the prospect and said in a press release, “Rep. Tricia Cotham campaigned as a Democrat and supporter of abortion rights, health care, public education, gun safety and civil rights. The voters of House District 112 elected her to serve as that person and overwhelmingly supported Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. Now, just a few months later, Rep. Cotham is changing parties.”\

As Democrats follow the progressive wing of their party many centrists of the Democrat party have left for the Republican party or now label themselves as Independent.

With the supermajority, the NC legislature will be able to override Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto power, making him powerless to legislation passed by the Republican legislature.

Cotham’s announcement is anticipated for Wednesday, we will see what the legislature does from there.
