California Democrat Congressman Alan Lowenthal has announced Thursday that he will not run for re-election in 2022.
“After serving the 47th District of California for almost 10 years in Washington, D.C., I have decided not to run for reelection to Congress in 2022. Read my full statement to my constituents:”

Lowenthal, 80, said in his statement that it is time to “pass the baton” and said it’s time to “rest and surround myself with the benefits of a life well lived and earned honorably in the service of my fellow citizens.”
Lowenthal is a lifelong politician and yet another high-profile Democrat who will not be running for re-election. He joins more than a dozen of Democrat lawmakers who have decided to not run again in 2022.
His district will most likely remain blue in 2022 as Lowenthal won re-election in 2020 by just under 27 points. However, Democrats still find themselves in a difficult situation with midterms coming around the corner, and Republicans are poised to take back the House.
Current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) may be out of her job as Speaker as there is likely to be a Republican Speaker in 2023.
Some may feel it is important that the GOP doesn’t just take back the House, but put in a Pro-Trump conservative Speaker of the House. In fact, Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz (R) has suggested Trump be made speaker.
