Brittney Griner ‘Afraid’ She Will Have to Serve Full 9 Year Sentence in Russia, According to Her Lawyer

Brittney Griner’s lawyer gave an interview on Wednesday. He expressed that Griner is not doing well and fears she may be stuck in Russian to serve out the 9-year sentence handed down to her earlier this year.

Her lawyer, Alexandr Boykov shared, “She has not been in as good condition as I could sometimes find her in.”

“She is not yet absolutely convinced that America will be able to take her home. She is very worried about what the price of that will be, and she is afraid that she will have to serve the whole sentence here in Russia,” he added

He also talked about her upcoming appeals hearing sharing, “Perhaps the verdict will somehow be changed and, perhaps, the sentence will be reduced, because the decision taken by the first court is very different from judicial practice. Considering all the circumstances, taking into account my client’s personality traits and her admission of guilt, such a verdict should be absolutely impossible.”

Griner’s wife, Cherelle, gave an interview to Gayle King about Brittney and she expressed concern for her wife’s mental health. Boykov interview only highlighted that Griner doesn’t seem to be handling her situation well.

Boykov also shared the difficulty they have had in arranging communication between Griner and her family. “She suffers a lot without her family because she hasn’t seen them for so long and it’s very difficult to talk to them in any way.”

Griner has an appeal that will be heard in a Russian court on October 25th. They are hoping something positive will come from this appeal and Griner’s wife has expressed that if something positive doesn’t come from the appeal she worries for Brittney.

Brittney seems convinced that if the appeal fails she will be locked away for the 9-year sentence. The Biden Administration has repeatedly expressed they are working to get Griner released. They are however at the mercy of Putin.

While Griner is locked up Biden still pushes hard against Putin for his continued war on Ukraine. Griner feels as if she is a pawn in all of this.

Griner and her family are currently awaiting the appeals case and hoping for a better resolution than the one already handed down.
