Wednesday, Representative Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA), who supported ‘defund the police’, was carjacked in broad daylight around 2:45 in the afternoon, after a meeting at FDR Park in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The vehicle was later recovered 45 miles away in Newark, Delaware with five suspects inside the vehicle.
According to Scanlon two men approached her after her meeting and demanded the keys to her 2017 Acura MDX, which she handed over. The pair left, one in her vehicle and one in another vehicle.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) put out a statement on the carjacking calling it “appalling”. Kenney has been mayor of Philadelphia since 2016.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw also commented on the carjacking, “I am relieved that Congresswoman Scanlon was not physically injured, and my thoughts are with her during this difficult time. The PPD will continue to provide any support needed in this case and will work diligently alongside our federal partners to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.”
Philadelphia has seen spike in crime as well as many other Democrat ran cities across the nation. Carjackings are up 80% this year compared to 2020. Homicides up 13% with 521 reported this year and incident involved shootings are also up in the city.
The crime spike in Philadelphia is not an anomaly many other democrat ran cities are seeing major spikes in crimes as many cities are release those charged with criminal acts with out a bail. In Philadelphia there is an organization paying the bail for those charged, the Philadelphia Bail Fund which admits that they may be letting people out who will commit more crimes by paying their bonds, “Of course, there will always be some risk that people out on bail commit crime.”. They are pushing for bail reform in Philadelphia which seems to correlate with the spike in crime in cities like New York City.
Tough on crime doesn’t seem to be the stance coming from Democrats in power. Press secretary Jen Psaki tried to place blame on COVID for the the spike in smash and grab robberies that have been plaguing some California cities. Others tried to blame the retailors themselves for the the increase in crime.
Many on Twitter are calling out the congresswoman who was carjacked for co-sponsoring a bill to defund the police. Bob Peach shared, “Mayor Jim Kenney of Philadelphia said Wednesday he was “appalled” by reports that U.S. Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon was allegedly carjacked at gunpoint in his city earlier in the day Why was the police and not Mental Health services called She co-.sponsed a bill to defund police”.

Only time will tell if ‘tough on crime’ will come back in favor or if ‘defund the police’ damage is done and the push to reform the current spike in crime will continue to grow.
