Senators Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and John Cornyn (R-TX) sent a letter to President Joe Biden regarding the immigration crisis at the U.S. southern border, requesting more resources to secure the situation at the border.

The Pair start off the letter “We write to urge you to use your full authorities to effectively respond to and
successfully manage the ongoing crisis at our Southwest Border. It is critical that our nation take
aggressive steps to secure our border, protect our communities and ensure migrants are treated
fairly and humanely. We pledge to work with our Congressional colleagues to develop bipartisan
and commonsense responses to the surge of migrants at the border, and hope to collaborate with
you, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and the rest of
your Administration to tackle this challenge.” This all sounds good.
In the second paragraph of the letter their real objective becomes clear, “Your administration should take immediate action in two areas: ensuring there are sufficient resources and facilities at the border to manage the crisis and taking concrete steps to improve the asylum process.”
According to the letter addressed to President Biden the number of individuals encountered at the southern border in just the first two months of the year (382,617) is close to the total encountered in the entire year of 2020 (405,036). These numbers are reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The sheer volume of encounters should alarm anyone as if the trend continues the encounters will be well over 2 million for the year.
With an administration soft on immigration at the wheel of the ship, we are being steered into an immigration iceberg. Press Secretary Jen Psaki has made it clear the Biden administration will not be taking any advice on immigration from former President Trump. However, this does not negate or fix the issue at the southern border.
The letter goes on about improving conditions and services to the migrants that have illegally crossed our border and in the sixth paragraph they come to a head with the words ”streamline the asylum process“. We are on track for over two million migrants crossings and Cornyn and Sinema want to make sure that we streamline the asylum process.
This is how they propose we secure our border. This doesn’t sound like a solution in securing the border this sounds like an invitation to incentivizes even more migrants over the southern border. One has to wonder what Texas and Arizona constituents think of over 2 million more migrants being streamlined through the asylum process. That many will have an impact on all on the contingent 48.
Where is the border protection and security in this letter? How does this help the crisis at the border or do anything for American Citizens?
