Congressman John Lewis died Friday. Lewis has held his seat in congress since 1987, serving the 5th congressional district of Georgia.
Lewis was the leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and one of the original Freedom Riders in the 60s. He was a speaker at the March on Washington in 1963 and marched in Selma, Alabama.
Lewis was not a fan of President Trump and voted for Trump’s Impeachment. Lewis had told the press he believed the president was a racist.
It is likely House Republicans will only have nice things to say about the Congressman. The Republican leader of the Senate, Mitch McConnell issued his statement on the passing of John Lewis, which can be seen below.
