DeSantis: Freedom Includes Freedom from Indoctrination

The Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis (R) discussed Critical Race Theory, among other things, on Glenn Beck’s show on Blaze TV earlier this month. DeSantis shared a clip from that episode, captioning it, “Freedom includes the freedom from indoctrination. We, therefore, reject teaching kids to hate our country or to hate each other through concepts such as CRT.”

In the one-minute clip, DeSantis claims the left is trying to portray the United States was founded because of slavery. Most historians would dispute such a fact as most of the individuals who originally came to America were fleeing religious persecution.

DeSantis continues to say that the left portrays the founders as men who wanted to hold tight to slavery. “Actually a lot of them were embarrassed that this was something that was there. Even people like Washington, who owned slaves, freed slaves. Jefferson he always, he would agonize about slavery, and I know he participated in it, he recognized it was wrong,” DeSantis defended.

“So intellectually you have very few of the revolutionary generation make a compelling positive case for slavery,” explained DeSantis. DeSantis then says the left is taking the position of Stephen Douglas (D), a U.S Senator who debated against Abraham Lincoln claiming that the constitution was about slavery. While Lincoln debated that this country was founded on liberty and it’s something that the country has to continue to fight for.

DeSantis concludes the clip with, “So we [in Florida] are teaching the accurate history and we’re basically teaching it from the perspective of a Lincoln or a Fredrick Douglas rather than a Stephen Douglas.”

Earlier this year, in April, DeSantis signed bill HB7 called the “Individual Freedom” measure, banning Critical Race Theory from being taught in schools in Florida.

At the press conference after the signing of the bill, DeSantis stated, “We believe in education, not indoctrination. We believe an important component of freedom in the state of Florida is the freedom from having oppressive ideologies opposed upon you without your consent.”

This is just one of many actions DeSantis has taken in his first term as Governor of Florida which had drawn much attention from the media as well as those across the nation. DeSantis runs Florida very contrary to many other states, bucking the trend of perceived weak-kneed Republican Governors many may see across the country.

With all of the attention garnered from his individualized approach, there has been much speculation as to whether or not he would run in 2024 for the presidential Republican nominee. Currently this year he is running for re-election however, and so far it seems that the odds are much in his favor for keeping his role.
