Despite Biden Asking to Send it to His Desk, Dem ‘Power Grab’ Voting Bill Torpedoed By Republicans in the Senate

In a split 50-50 vote, Senate Bill 1, a voting bill that Sen Ron Johnson (R-WI) called a Democratic “Power grab” was torpedoed by Republicans in the Senate, after it fell short of a filibuster-proof majority.

Prior to that, President Joe Biden pleaded for the bill to be passed by the Senate and for them to send it to his desk.

Biden said, “We can’t sit idly by while democracy is in peril – here, in America. We need to protect the sacred right to vote and ensure ‘We the People’ choose our leaders, the very foundation on which our democracy rests. We urgently need the For The People Act.”

U.S. Sen Ron Johnson (R-WI) released a statement on the “power grab” by the Democrats prior to the vote where he accused them of trying to make it “easier to cheat.”

“The ‘For the People Act’ is another Orwellian-named bill that has nothing to do with voting rights but everything to do with consolidating Democrat control over government and our lives,” Johnson explained.

Democrats were furious after the vote and accusing Republicans of supporting voter suppression or worse.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the Senate floor, “Once again, Senate Republicans have signed their names in the ledger of history alongside Donald Trump, the big lie, and voter suppression to their enduring disgrace.”

U.S. House Rep Adam Schiff (R-CA) claimed, “Voting down the For the People Act shows America what the GOP is: A party against democracy, for dark money, and for voter suppression.”

“They’ll continue their assault on voting rights across the nation. No matter what they do, we must turn out more voters than ever,” Schiff added.
