DHS Lawyers up as GOP Ramps up Mayorkas Impeachment Push

The Department of Homeland Security hired New York based firm Debevoise & Plimpton, which has “diversity and inclusion” at its core values, to advise officials on how to handle document requests and congressional investigators’ questions. This comes as the House GOP members move to remove or impeach DHS secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the poor handling of the southern border’s security under Border Czar Vice President Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.

This would be the first time since 1876 that a Cabinet member has had impeachment proceedings brought against them.

A DHS spokesperson said in a statement, “The Department of Homeland Security has retained outside counsel to help ensure the department’s vital mission is not interrupted by the unprecedented, unjustified, and partisan impeachment efforts by some Members of Congress, who have already taken steps to initiate proceedings.”

Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, who has threatened to impeach Mayorkas said, “We will never use impeachment for political reasons. It’s just not going to happen. That doesn’t mean if something rises to the level of impeachment, we would not do it. So, what you’ll find is the committees are together. They’ll start the inquiry and let it go wherever it takes them.”

U.S. Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) chairman of the Judiciary Committee and Jomes Comer (R-KY) chairman of the Oversight Committee have both launched hearings into the southern border and Mayorkas.

As Jordan chairs the Judiciary Committee, it would be u to him to lead the impeachment inquiry.

U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) filed an impeachment resolution against Mayokas last week. It appears that the GOP isn’t sure they would have the votes to be successful in impeaching Mayorkas, but, are moving forward with hearings to see where things stand.

Mayorkas has made statements trying to place the blame for the problems at the border on Congress. “Everyone agrees that the immigration system has been terribly broken and outdated for decades. It is my hope that Congress takes that problem and fixes it once and for all,” Mayorkas told Politico.

He added, “In the meantime, within a broken system, we are doing everything that we can to increase its efficiency, to provide humanitarian relief when the law permits, and to also deliver an enforcement consequence when the law dictates,” he said. “That is exactly what we are doing, and I will continue to do that with tremendous pride alongside the incredible workforce at DHS.”

We will see where the hearings in the House lead and if Mayorkas will eventually be removed.
