ESPN Commentator Stephen A. Smith Claims Tim Tebow’s Return to NFL is ‘White Privilege’

Stephen A. Smith says he is happy for Tim Tebow to have the opportunity to come back and play in the NFL again. He believes Tebow deserves it called him a pillar of that community, at least this is what he said before he addressed the problem he has with it.

The overall picture however in his view he sees it as “White privilege”. The same thing he said when the Brooklyn Nets hired Steve Nash as head coach last year. He wants to make it clear that he is not attacking them on a personal level and just asking, “what brother do you know is getting this opportunity.” He doesn’t give a “damn how you feel” about what he has to say about race.

Smith then starts to jump on Tebow bringing up that he has never played the position and he hasn’t played in the NFL for quite some time. He also says Tebow wasn’t that good of a quarterback in the NFL. He then says those comments aren’t about Tebow but that this opportunity only came about because Urban Meyers recently became the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Stephen also touches on the riots after George Floyd and also brings up equity in the clip below.

In response to Smith’s commentary twitter user @MichaelJFell highlights, “Never mind that the NFL is 70% black, right .@stephenasmith? ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith slams Tim Tebow’s return to the NFL as example of ‘white privilege’”

The head coach of the Jaguars gave an interview before officially signing Tebow about him. During the interview, Meyers calls Tebow the “most competitive maniac you’re ever going to talk to”. He said before he ever looked at Tebow for a roll other staff members watched him try out. Tebow was told what he had to work on and he did just that and came back with their word headed and made improvements. Meyer was Tebow’s coach when he played for Florida in college, now the pair is back together.

Admittedly Smith believes that Tebow deserves this chance that he has earned it he is just unsettled that he believes the same opportunity wouldn’t be available to a “brother”. This belief system counters civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech in which he said, “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” It appears that Tebow was given this opportunity not because he is White but because he is as Smith said a “Pillar of that community”. He gives his all and is an overall good guy.

All eyes will be on Tim Tebow this season watching his every move, his failures, and successes. The media may trample him if he doesn’t succeed.
