Fallen U.S. Marine’s Family Sues Alec Baldwin for 25 Million in Defamation Lawsuit

Fallen Marine Lance Cpl. Rylee J. McCollum’s family has filed a lawsuit against 63-year-old actor Alec Baldwin. The lawsuit alleges defamation, invasion of privacy, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

McCollum was one of 13 U.S. service members killed in the Kabul airport blast back in August, during the Biden departure debacle. Earlier this month Baldwin shared on Instagram that he had given $5,000 to McCollum’s widow to help with their newborn daughter. Baldwin called the check a “tribute to a fallen soldier”.

Things quickly soured after McCollum’s sister Roice shared a photo of herself at the Washington Monument on January 6th, 2021. Roice admits that she was one of many protesters who showed up to Washington D.C. on January 6th. According to court documents she was there to protest the vote certification of Joe Biden but she did not partake in any rioting or unlawful activity.

Roice was turned into the authorities by a neighbor who wasn’t happy that she had attended the demonstration. She was interviewed by the FBI and cleared of any wrongdoing.

The court documents show direct messages between Roice and Bladwin, where he labels her as a “rioter”. “When I sent the $ for your late brother, out of real respect for his service to this country, I didn’t know you were a January 6th rioter,” Baldwin wrote.

Roice responded, “Protesting is perfectly legal in the country and I’ve already had my sit down with the FBI. Thanks, have a nice day!”

Baldwin then informed her, “I don’t think so. Your activities resulted in the unlawful destruction of government property, the death of a law enforcement officer, an assault on the certification of the presidential election. I reposted your photo. Good luck.”

The repost of the photo that Roice had shared labeled Roice as an “insurrectionist”. The post went out to his 2.4 million Instagram followers but has since been deleted. Roice and her family were harassed with hateful comments after the post went public.

The court document states, “Baldwin’s conduct was negligent and reckless as he should have known that making the allegations he did against plaintiffs to his millions of followers would cause plaintiffs harm… Baldwin’s comments were false, outrageous, defamatory, irresponsible, vindictive, and caused – and continue to cause — plaintiffs severe emotional distress. Instead of being able to focus on grieving LCPL McCollum’s death and raising his newborn daughter, plaintiffs and their family are now fearful for their lives.”

Baldwin has clearly not been humbled a bit after the shooting of Halyna Hutchins. He continues to do what some believe to be harassment against others online, instead of reflecting on his actions. The investigation into the onset shooting is still ongoing and Baldwin recently turned over his phone a month after a warrant was issued for it.

Many are watching to see if Baldwin will face any charges involving the shooting or not. We will see if this lawsuit goes to court or if a settlement is made.
