The Jury reached a verdict in the trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin this afternoon and it was announced at 4:08 EST. The verdict was read a little after 5 PM EST. Many Americans have been watching to see what the verdict will be in this case and today we have an answer. Chauvin has been found guilty on all counts.
The Judge will not issue sentencing today only the verdict has been read.
Police in Minneapolis have started closing their gates and putting up barriers.
We have yet to see what will come after this verdict. In anticipation of civil unrest many cities have bolstered their police presence and in some cases brought in the National Guard such as in Washington D.C.
The Democrat Governor of Minnesota, Tim Waltz, is set to give a speech after the verdict reading. President Joe Biden will make comments when appropriate as one White House official has announced. Biden said earlier that he was “praying” for a guilty verdict, which some have argued is not appropriate.
Black Lives Matter made their view clear before the reading of the verdict, opening up the door for them to riot regardless of the outcome.
There will be no wins in this. Justice would mean George Floyd would still be with us.
