A recent interview with actor Mel Gibson was cut short after Fox News’ Jesse Watters put him on the spot by asking about the assault that took place at the Oscars last Sunday where actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock.
As the Washington Examiner reported, Gibson, is no stranger to controversy himself and was there to promote his newest film, Father Stu.
The movie is based on the true story of Stuart Long, a boxer who became a Catholic priest and stars Mark Wahlberg in the titular role.
Early on in the interview, Gibson addressed one of the themes of the movie, although it almost seemed like it could have applied to the situation that occurred at the Oscars.
Gibson told Watters, “Everyone’s got a boulder, man. Something’s going to come and knock you down at some point in your life. Now. Later. And how do you stand up from that, you know? How do you not only stand up, but how do you find a purpose in that? There’s a purpose for all of this. So it’s looking for that purpose.”
After nearly five minutes, Watters asked Gibson, “I was wondering if, you know, you had been the one that jumped up out of his seat and slapped Chris Rock, if you would have been treated the same way, Mel?”
Gibson broke into a chuckle and appeared to motion to cut the interview and a female voice interrupted to tell Watters their time was up.
Watters pressed, “Have you ever thought about that?” but was again cut off by a female voice who told him, “Um, I’m — thank you, Jesse. Uh, we — that is our time.”
“Ok, well Mel, thank you very much for joining Jesse Watters Primetime, we really appreciate it,” Watters said and shared the release date for the actor’s new movie.
Gibson then thanked Watters as the intervew concluded.
