Furious Joy Reid Gives Anti-Police Advice After Kim Potter Sentence: ‘Mind Your Air Fresheners if You’re Black and Driving’

MSNBC’s Joy Reid was furious after the sentencing of former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter and gave anti-police advice afterward.

Reid suggested to “mind your air fresheners if you’re Black and driving,” although Wright was fatally shot by Potter after she initially pulled him over for an expired registration tag on his car.

According to former Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon, who resigned after the incident, Potter then determined he had an outstanding warrant for a gross misdemeanor weapons charge and tried to detain him.

Wright was able to free himself after an attempted arrest and tried to get back in his vehicle, which caused, according to Potter’s attorneys, her to accidentally grab her firearm instead of her stun gun and shoot him.

As we reported earlier, Potter has been sentenced to two years, with 16 months behind bars and 8 months of supervised release for a total sentence of 2 years after being convicted of first and second-degree manslaughter

Judge Regina Chu explained her decision by saying, “I recognize there will be those who disagree with the sentence. That I granted a significant downward departure does not in any way diminish Daunte Wright’s life. His life mattered. And to those who disagree and feel a longer prison sentence is appropriate, as difficult as it may be, please try to empathize with Ms. Potter’s situation.”

Reid, however, was not pleased and voiced her opinion in a four-part tweet where she began, “Kim Potter sentenced to 2 years for killing Daunte Wright. And the judge is giving her all the sympathy in the world. It really sounded like she was about to give her probation.”

“But this is barely more than that and not even two full years. 16 months plus credit for time served, and a paltry $1,000 fine,” Reid continued.

Reid suggested, “The judge sounds like she is about to cry, not for Daunte Wright and his family, but for Kim Potter. Wow.”

Then Reid explained, “And rather than go the obvious route and quote that one MLK line, the judge went with an Obama quote. Ok I’m done. Time for a mental health break!”

“Be safe out there and mind your air fresheners if you’re Black and driving,” Reid concluded and added an enraged face emoji.
