California Dem Gov. Gavin Newsom has targeted Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis in an attack ad that is reportedly being broadcast on stations in the sunshine state.
The attack by Newsom comes despite data showing that more people moved from California to Florida in recent years.
Data compiled by the South Florida Business Journal showed that 18,000 California residents moved to Florida in 2019 and over 17,000 did the same in 2020.
Newsom shared the ad in a tweet where he declared, “We’re about to celebrate Independence Day — but Freedom is under attack by Republican leaders in states like Florida.”
“Banning books. Restricting speech. Making it harder to vote. Criminalizing women and doctors,” Newsom claimed.
Newsom then suggested that “It’s time to stand up. Don’t let them take your freedom.”
In the ad, Newsom also made a pitch for Floridians to reverse the shifting population trend.
Newsom said, “I urge all of you living in Florida to join the fight or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom.”

Fox News pointed out that in the past, DeSantis has expressed concerns about California residents fleeing to Florida.
DeSantis noted that thousands of Californians have moved to Texas in recent years and continue to vote for Democrats.
“It’s like the leftism, they will not draw the connection between their leftist ideology and the destruction that’s all around them. It is a problem because I do think there’s a class of voters who would come to Florida, and they would continue to vote the same way,” DeSantis said in April.
