Grand Jury Officially Indicts Clinton Ally Michael Sussman Just Before Statute of Limitations is up, for Lying to FBI General Counsel

Last night, we reported that Michael Sussman was likely to be indicted by John Durham, just in the “nick of time”, for those hoping for this outcome anyway.

It was reported that Saturday would have been the statute of limitation limit for this to happen. Sussman was a legal representative for the Hillary Clinton campaign with Perkins Coie. As we reported late last night in part:

Hillary Clinton tweeted on Halloween of 2016 that “computer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank.” This was around the time Marc Elias met with Christopher Steele.

Elias was the general counsel for the failed presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton. Michael Sussmann, who worked for Perkins Coie, the Clinton legal firm, is the man who John Durham is seeking to indict. This is in regards to the debunked Steele dossier that the Clinton campaign tried to use against the Trump campaign.

Elias was the former head of Perkins Coie. Robby Mook was Clinton’s campaign manager and allegedly authorized Elias to dig up dirt on Trump’s Russia connections in 2016. Sussman is allegedly the source for 2016 stories in the news about alleged secretive server claims.

It’s tough to say if Sussman could flip on others or if any other arrests or investigations could come from this. It could also be the only big play from the Durham investigation. Time will certainly tell, meanwhile, Ryan J. Reilly tweeted some details on this breaking indictment:

“BREAKING: A federal grand jury has returned an indictment against cybersecurity attorney Michael Sussmann, who represented the DNC in connection with the 2016 Russia hack. The indictment was sought by Special Counsel John Durham.

The indictment accuses Michael Sussmann of lying when he “stated to the General Counsel of the FBI that he was not acting on behalf of any client in conveying particular allegations concerning a Presidential candidate…”

“2016 gets one last pop in just before the five-year statute of limitations bell rings:

All eyes move to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware.”

It looks like at least one person behind the Steele dossier that was reportedly fabricated to help Hillary Clinton’s ultimately doomed 2016 presidential campaign is being held to account. Many Republicans and Trump supporters were hoping to see more out of the Durham investigation.

Although it’s not over, and many are glad to see at least some action, it may come as underwhelming news. We will stay tuned to see what else may develop.

Jonathan Turley says that “the indictment is detailed and damning…”

Others on Twitter opined:

“That’s a felony. A conviction has implications for his legal career, and the question now is “who” as in “who can Sussman give up? There is are “inside” and “outside” tracks in the investigation. Sussman can help with both.”

Some are surprised that AG Merrick Garland is not stepping in:

“Sussman’s lawyers claim this is the DOJ acting in a political way but AG Merrick Garland has the power to overrule Durham and apparently isn’t doing it. I don’t think Garland is a secret right-winger.”

Eric Garland sought to spell it out better for anyone who may not fully grasp the situation:

“FIRST DURHAM GRAND JURY INDICTMENT CHARGES DEMOCRATIC PARTY CONNECTED LAWYER WITH LYING TO FBI ABOUT MATTERS CONNECTED TO TRUMP-RUSSIA

1. Bullshitting the FBI about national security may attract considerable attention. Russian Bank-1 is ALFA BANK.

2. Sussman is alleged to have covered up his working on behalf of the HILLARY CLINTON 2016 CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT.”

Ed Morrisey speculated about possible bigger fish:

“Michael Sussman has been a little more than a peripheral character in this drama. But is he Durham’s big target, or is this an attempt to flip him for bigger prizes? The latter strategy has a spotty record for special counsels, it should be noted.

It’s still game on for special counsel John Durham after all. And his new target has some interesting connections, too. NYT: Durham will ask grand jury to indict prominent Dem-connected attorney”

Stay tuned for more possible updates…

Catherine Herridge gave her breakdown of the situation:

#Durham NEW: Indictment “..on Sept. 19, 2016, Sussman, a lawyer at a large international law firm, met with the FBI General Counsel at FBI HQ… Sussman had requested the meeting to provide the GC with certain data files + “white papers” that allegedly demonstrated a covert…”
