Former Texas State Senator, Don Huffines, is challenging Greg Abbott, among what could be a crowded field in the upcoming Governor’s race. Huffines considers himself extremely conservative. He believes Governor Abbott only does the right thing when all other options have been exhausted and often only under pressure from angry constituents and bad media reports.
It appears to us that Huffines is running on a platform of doing what the people who elected him want, within reason, and when they want it. At least that’s the impression we get from what we’ve seen so far. Huffines is from Dallas and is a former state senator in Texas, so he knows his way around politics. He recently released a video discussing more about what he thinks “actual Republican leadership in Texas” would look like.
Of course, we know Abbott just signed off on permit-free conceal carry in Texas, but many ask the question of why not before? Why was Abbott so weak on the destruction of Confederate monuments in Texas when radical liberals were tearing them down, which won’t stop either?
“Greg Abbott has been governor of Texas for six years, and the border is more open and dangerous today than at any time in history” he begins the video. He continues, “thousands of illegals come into Texas every single day. This is an invasion. I’m Don Huffines. I’m running for Governor to bring actual Republican leadership to Texas. The only reason Greg Abbott is talking about building a border wall now is because he’s facing a serious primary challenge that threatens his political career. Our campaign is receiving incredible momentum and making him nervous. As Governor, we will build a wall, and shut down the border entirely until illegal immigration stops. And I will not ask permission from the federal government to secure Texas’ border. I will also end all taxpayer subsidies to these illegals.”

Recently former President Trump endorsed Greg Abbott for re-election. In our view that is likely because Trump thinks Abbott has the best chance of winning according to his advisors. It’s not common for Trump to get involved in primary battles against incumbents like this one unless he has a personal bone to pick. But that hasn’t stopped insurgent campaigns from Huffines from popping up anyway.
If he wins it will be very interesting, and even if he doesn’t, many of Huffines’ supporters may see this as a potential way to light a proverbial fire under Abbott and get him to keep more promises to his constituents and help Texas and the United States of American preserve what’s left that’s good.
