After Krewe of Endymion, one of the largest Mardi Gras parades announced on Saturday that Mel Gibson would be one of the co-Grand Marshals of this year’s parade, they quickly caved to potentially violent leftist wokesters by Sunday afternoon. They deleted their post about Gibson as well as made a formal announcement that Gibson’s invitation had been revoked.
The parade claims it was over safety concerns and threats.
Endymion president Dan Kelly shared in a statement:
“The Krewe of Endymion has received significant feedback about our grand marshal announcement. Some of this commentary included threats that cause us great concern. In the best interest of the safety of our riders, special guests, and everyone that welcomes us on the streets, Mel Gibson will not ride as a co-Grand Marshal for our 2023 parade.”
The ADL as well as the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans and the Greater New Orleans Rabbinic Council issued a joint statement in opposition to Gibson being Grand Marshal:
“Mel Gibson has a long history of making antisemitic, racist and misogynistic slurs. While the actor has made half-hearted attempts to apologize for his remarks over the years, there is still a great deal of pain associated with his name and deep wounds in the Jewish community from those controversies, which may never heal. Given his history of fueling antisemitism and other forms of hate, we find his choice as Grand Marshal of Endymion was completely insulting and shortsighted.”
“Although we are relieved he is no longer riding, we hope the Endymion leadership will take the opportunity to learn why the selection of Mel Gibson caused such pain and disappointment to the Jewish community, as well as the marginalized communities he has harmed in the past.”
Mel Gibson is a well-known actor and director who has come under much scrutiny for controversial statements he made in the early 2000s. Since these statements, many want to see him permanently canceled.
Gibson was People magazine’s first “Sexiest Man Alive” a title he was awarded in 1985. Gibson also won Best Director and Best Picture at the 1996 Oscars for “Braveheart”.
While many want to see Gibson canceled he has managed to stay a part of Hollywood. He was most recently nominated for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge at the 2017 Oscars. In 2022 Gibson had six films released, it doesn’t appear that Gibson plans on going away anytime soon.
