“Are you saying he has a same-sex partner?” the caucus goer asks. “Yes” replies the Buttigieg precinct captain. “Are you kidding?” the caucus goer asks. The woman was completely unaware that Mayor Pete was gay. Tells the precinct captain “Then I don’t want anyone like that in the White House, so can I have my card back?” The precinct captain replies “I don’t know, you signed it we can go ask.”
The precinct captain then tries to talk the woman out of changing her vote. “He’s a human being right, just like you and me and it shouldn’t really matter” The woman responds “Well better read the bible.” “He does and he says that God doesn’t choose a political party, “The clearly frustrated precinct captain retorts.
The woman who wants to cancel her vote for Buttigieg points out the bible says a man should marry a woman. The Buttigieg precinct captain responds by saying that she respects the other woman’s view on the matter, then she goes on to say that we weren’t around when the bible was written, possibly implying that scripture doesn’t imply in modern times.
The voter wanted to know why the information wasn’t presented to her before and is told it is common knowledge that Buttigieg is married to a man. The precinct captain tries to persuade the voter not to change her vote by saying “should it matter if it’s a woman or a man, or if they’re heterosexual or homosexual if you believe in what they say?” The voter responds that “it all just went down the toilet” That comment was probably in reference to the voter’s perspective of modern-day society.
At that point, the precinct captain sees she hasn’t changed the woman’s mind and backtracks and says she isn’t trying to change the woman’s mind, clarifying that the voter has the right to her opinion.
She then asks the voter, as a Christian woman to Christian woman, to look in her heart because her god wants her to love everybody. To this, the voter responds “you must not believe in him (referring to God) if you think it’s okay for the marriage of same-sex person” The precinct captain then responds that they just both interpret the Bible differently which is “okay” but she believes “love is love” and that is what she is teaching her son. The video doesn’t show if the woman was able to cancel her vote for ‘Mayor Pete’. From looking at her shirt it looks like she would have changed her vote to Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) had she known Mayor Pete was married to a man.
Currently, we are awaiting the results from the Iowa caucuses. There was an unidentified error last night and the results have not yet been released. Buttigieg did claim victory last night without having the official results. This led to backlash on Twitter with the hashtag #mayorcheat trending today on Twitter. The final polling released on the 2nd of this month showed Bernie Sanders was in the lead. Without the results, it seems that all of the campaigns are now planning their moves in New Hampshire while they await Iowa’s votes. We have yet to see anyone drop out. That may all change once the Iowa results are released.
