The Biden administration seems to have had a change of heart when it comes to the southern border at least.
A proposal was introduced Tuesday that would bar migrants who cross the border illegally from claiming amnesty unless they had first asked for protection from a country they traveled through on their way to the United States.
Before the policy goes into effect in thirty days, it will be open for public comments. The policy would be in effect for two years following the public comment phase.
With the Covid-19 health emergencies to end in May, the Biden administration is anticipating a surge at the border.
In order for a person to try to pursue asylum, they will have to get an appointment at a legal port of entry, which they can do through an app, then apply for legal pathways, including the new parole process, or they have to be rejected by a country they traveled through. exceptions will be made for those with medical emergencies or those facing extreme threats to their lives or safety.
This change in the handling of the border will likely anger some Democrats. Lee Gelernt, ACLU attorney told Axios, “We successfully sued to stop the Trump asylum bans and will sue again if the Biden administration enacts these anti-asylum rules.”
It seems Biden may be trying to make an attempt to shift his position on the border as the 2024 election cycle seems to be heating up.
We will see if changes are made to the policy while the public comment period is open, or if Biden sticks it out and enforces harsher polices at the border.
