GOP U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has pledged to hold Democrat Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg “accountable”.
McCarthy shared on Twitter:
“Alvin Bragg is attempting to interfere in our democratic process by invoking federal law to bring politicized charges against President Trump, admittedly using federal funds, while at the same time arguing that the peoples’ representatives in Congress lack jurisdiction to investigate this farce. Not so. Bragg’s weaponization of the federal justice process will be held accountable by Congress.”
When the news broke that Bragg was priming a grand jury to indict the former president, McCarthy announced he was directing the chairs of the appropriate House committees to investigate the possible use of federal funds in Bragg’s case.
The next week, the committee chairman hit the ground running with a letter requesting documents and testimony from Bragg and his office. Bragg’s office responded to the request calling the request an, “unlawful incursion into New York’s sovereignty.”
The letter also read they would be willing to “meet and confer to understand whether the Committee has any legitimate legislative purpose in the requested materials that could be accommodated without impeding [New York’s sovereign police power].”
Donald Trump has now been formally indicted and arraigned, we will see what McCarthy does next.
