In the eighth round of voting for the House Speaker, U.S. House Rep Lauren Boebert (R-CO) threw out a new option and cast a vote for U.S. House Rep Kevin Hern (R-OK).
Hern then received a second vote from U.S. House Rep Josh Brecheen (R-OK), who has also been opposing U.S. House Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the beginning.
Brecheen will be a first-term Congressman who has announced that he intends to join the Freedom Caucus.
The vote came as a surprise, although U.S. House Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) had voted for former President and 2024 GOP Presidential nominee Donald Trump in the previous round, which he did in the current round as well.
Boebert noted that Hern was not a Freedom Caucus member and called him a “true, consensus candidate” as she voted for him and her speech prior to the vote ultimately was shouted down as being out of order.

Hern, who will be entering his third term in Congress, has been a supporter of McCarthy and has voted for him from the beginning, doing so again in the latest round.
Thus far, all other GOP members who oppose McCarthy have voted for U.S. House Rep Byron Donalds (R-FL) for a fifth time now.
U.S. House Rep Victoria Spartz (R-IN) continues to vote “present” as she did for the first time in the fourth round.
U.S. House Rep Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was nominated by the Democrats and his total has remained the same thus far as the previous seven rounds.
