Texas Senate Bill 8 took effect at midnight. This law bans most abortions after 6 weeks and is one of the strictest abortion bans in the country. The law allows private citizens to sue anyone who helps a woman obtain abortion services.

Abortion providers had appealed for an immediate emergency injunction on Monday, claiming that it would limit abortion access for 85% of patients and force clinics to close in Texas.
Justice Alito had given the state of Texas till 5 pm Tuesday to put forth their argument for rejecting the injunction.
“BREAKING: The Supreme Court has not responded to our emergency request to block Texas’ radical new 6-week abortion ban, SB8. The law now takes effect. Access to almost all abortion has just been cut off for millions of people. The impact will be immediate and devastating.”

This news has sent liberals into a frenzy. Liberal OB/GYN Leah Torres, MD, she/her declared on Twitter that the law is not an abortion ban, but a “reproductive coercion law”. She then called it the other side of, “forced sterilization” continuing on to call it, “fascism” and “eugenics”. This would make women face the consequences of deliberate actions of consensual coitus, something she seemingly neglects to acknowledge.
“Texas isn’t passing an abortion ban. Texas is passing a reproductive coercion law. Government sanctioned reproductive coercion. Different side of the forced sterilization coin. This is fascism. This is eugenics. This is tyranny. This is the destruction of democracy in The USA.”

Liberal Rachel Maddow dedicated a segment to the new statute. In the segment, Maddow claims, “What Texas has devised is a bizarre, dystopian vigilante system for hunting women in Texas who seek abortions. A vigilante system to effectively ban abortion and shut down all abortion providers in the state, not to mention terrorizing women who are seeking the procedure.”

The Supreme Court is set to hear an abortion case this year when they come back in session. The case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is currently waiting to be heard by the court sometime after September 13th of this year. This case involves a Mississippi law that prohibits abortion with limited exceptions after 15 weeks gestation. This case could affect the previous supreme court ruling of Roe v Wade that set the nation ablaze with abortions.
Many believe this law is giving a voice to the voiceless. They see this as a win as many people view abortion as the murder of a child by its mother, while others only view it as the elimination of a clump of cells. With the progression of technology since Roe V. Wade, it is hard to debate that it is not life growing in the womb of a woman. Watching the movements of the babies inside their mothers on ultrasound it’s hard to see anything but a child.
