U.S. House Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) shared a video on his social media titled “The Real Kevin McCarthy”.
The video starts with former “establishment” GOP Speaker of the House Paul Ryan describing Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as “the right person” for Speaker of the House.
The next clip shows Fox News’ Steve Doocy asking McCarthy about living with the corporate consultant and pollster Frank Luntz. McCarthy seems to laugh off the question replying, “I didn’t know how this was controversial”.
The video then cuts back to Ryan saying, “We came together as a team in 2015, we put together an agenda, we are executing that agenda, we’re getting it done.”
The next clip is Kevin McCarthy with Fox News’ Bill Melugin. Melugin asks McCarthy about the audio where McCarthy says he has had enough of Donald Trump and would ‘tell him to his face’ that he should resign. Melugin then asks him, “Do you still stand by those comments?”
McCarthy sidestepped, “I never told the president to resign, it was a conversation that we had about scenarios going forward.” Melugin asks, “Did you lie?” In the clip, McCarthy’s answer is echoed, “No”.
The video continues highlighting McCarthy as an establishment GOP. His call for bipartisan justice against “the mob” referring to January 6th.
At one point Gaetz shares, “This is the same Kevin McCarthy who said that I was a danger to others because I verbally criticized Liz Cheney. This is the same Kevin McCarthy who spent tens of millions of dollars in primaries against America First candidates.”
Joe Kent is featured in the video saying, “Kevin McCarthy is still supporting 5 of the 10 GOP impeachment voters. He wants to wear MAGA like a bumper sticker, to use it to drive funds and fundraising.”
McCarthy wants to be the Speaker of the House. Many GOP members are ready for a change in leadership, someone who is outside of the establishment. Publicly there are five members of the GOP who have shared they will vote no on McCarthy for Speaker and others who have not publicly committed.

Gaetz also shared a video of an interview he did will Mike Huckabee on Gettr, with “Democrats will not elect the next Speaker of the House. That is a threat constructed by folks in The Swamp of Washington who want a Speaker beholden to lobbyists.”
Words that may be targeted at GOP members like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who are afraid that the Democrats will elect the next Speaker of the House if they don’t all align behind McCarthy.
Gaetz has pushed back against social media influencers trying to help McCarthy.
The Speaker of the House will be elected on the first day of the next Congress which will be in January of 2023. We will see what becomes of this struggle within the GOP.
