Mechanicsville Rotary gets WOKE. Bans display of all “Confederate flags and emblems” by participants in Mechanicsville’s annual Christmas parade. For years, the Mechanicsville Christmas parade has featured units that proudly represented Hanover’s rich Confederate heritage.
The Virginia Flaggers have participated each year over the past 10 years with Lee, Jackson, and a Confederate color Guard leading our unit. Local SCV, UDC, and OCR groups participated, as well. Past Parade officials contacted us each year to make sure we got our application in, telling us our group was one of the most popular and crowd-pleasing, and our participation in and promotion of the event was a big draw to boost attendance.
All that changed when we visited the site to register this year and found a notice on the front page of the website declaring the new “woke” ban. We did not even receive the courtesy of communication to explain the new rules, and our messages and attempts to contact Rotary officials have been unreturned.
With no explanations offered, we are left to assume that the Rotary has been taken over by liberals who are taking their cue from the Hanover County School board, who voted against the wishes of the overwhelming majority of Hanover residents and changed the historic names of county schools in order to appease a handful of outside agitators.
Obviously, we won’t be participating in a parade that discriminates against us and our history and heritage. We won’t march if we can’t display our colors. Period. CALL TO ACTION…BOYCOTT! We are asking parade participants and spectators to contact the Rotary and let them know if they do not reverse the ban, you won’t participate, either.

With Virginia’s recent rising up of angry parents at school board meetings, demanding CRT and woke ideology stop being taught to kids, and Republicans recently re-taking the state, ‘wokeness’ appears to still be alive and well. That being the case, history appreciators and right-wingers will need to get active on every level to keep making progress.
Mechanicsville is in Hanover County which broke heavily for Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020, but apparently, there are a few left-wingers around trying to cancel things still. Hopefully, if the Virginia Flaggers have any friends in leadership in Hanover County they will be able to help.
