‘Meta is Beta’ Wendy Rogers Mocks Facebook Company Name Change

It was reported today that Facebook has announced that it has changed its company name to Meta, based on the sci-fi term metaverse.

The name change was announced at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference and reportedly reflects the company’s growing ambitions beyond social media.

Facebook, now known as Meta, has adopted the new moniker to describe its vision for working and playing in a virtual world.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said of the decision, “Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started.”

The company, whose stock price closed up on today, also said in announcing the new name that it will change its stock ticker from FB to MVRS, effective Dec. 1.

Arizona GOP State Sen Wendy Rogers mocked the name change in a series of tweets following the news.

In the first tweet, Rogers declared, “Meta is beta.”

#Meta is Zucky’s way of saying #TrumpWon,” Rogers continued in the next tweet.

Rogers then suggested that, “Facebook is going to lose to Truth Social, Gab, Telegram, and GETTR so Zucky is acting like he isn’t doing social media anymore.”

In a demo shown by Zuckerberg of the company’s ambition for the metaverse, users were seen hanging out in space as cartoon-like versions of themselves or fantastical characters, like a robot, that represent their virtual selves.

Zuckerberg explained, “We believe the metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet.”
