The Board of State Canvassers in Michigan approved six petitions to recall Governor Gretchen Whitmer and one petition against Lieutenant. Governor Garlin Gilchrist.
After the ruling came down on Thursday from Judges Kathleen Jansen and Michael Gadola of the Michigan Court of Appeals, Whitmer vowed to appeal the decision. Mark Fisk, a campaign spokesman for the governor, said, “We plan to appeal this disappointing decision and we fully intend to beat back these irresponsible partisan attacks against the Governor in the courts, on the streets, or at the ballot”. He went on to claim that this was a “coordinated attack by Republicans.”
The petitions to recall Whitmer are the result of several scandals she has been involved in over recent months. She has been accused of violating her own state’s travel restrictions regarding Covid-19. On April 5, the director of Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services issued an advisory to residents of the state saying, “travel increases your chance of spreading and getting COVID-19.” The guidelines went on to say, “We recommend that you do not travel at this time.” Despite restricting travel for the people of her state, Whitmer was seen in Florida as well as the director of Michigan HHS, Elizabeth Hertel, while the restrictions were still in effect.
A photograph from last weekend revealed Governor Whitmer enjoying an evening out at the Landshark Bar & Grill in East Lansing. In the photo, she was seen violating the state’s mask mandate and the 6 ft. social distancing rule. Shortly after the photo was leaked, Michigan rescinded the rule, and the county health officer chose not to fine the bar for the violation.
The Michigan governor has also received criticism over her use of a private jet, which has prompted the Oversight Committee to consider holding hearings to investigate the financial arrangements concerning her out-of-state trips. Michigan Rep. Steve Johnson, the chairman of the Michigan House Oversight Committee, told the Washington Examiner, “The people of Michigan deserve answers on what the Governor is trying to hide and why.”
Governor Whitmer is just one of two Democrat governors facing a possible recall. California Governor Gavin Newsom is also under intense scrutiny as recall organizations in California have successfully attained the number of signatures needed to force a recall.
