Sen Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has been accused by advisers of the former president of fueling the potential Trump-DeSantis rift.
Trump’s advisors pointed to the podcast Ruthless, which is co-hosted by McConnell’s longtime adviser Josh Holmes and where DeSantis made the attention-grabbing remarks.
According to NBC News, a top Trump adviser said, “I like Josh. Josh is great. But he’s a wholly-owned subsidiary of McConnell World. And there’s no way you can tell me that this was all a coincidence.”
The Trump adviser echoed four others who spoke on condition of anonymity because they didn’t have authorization to speak publicly about private discussions in his political shop.
The adviser asked in an interview, “Also, DeSantis and his staff knew what they were doing. How many Florida general election voters are listening to the Ruthless podcast?”
“Now, that said, they might have been hoping for more out of Ron, because, let’s face it, he didn’t really criticize Trump, but they knew the media would instantly jump on it and wish-cast it into existence,” the adviser added.
McConnell clearly sees DeSantis as a lesser of two evils and a way to annoy Trump the adviser believes, which would make sense given previous criticism by Trump of the longtime top Senate Republican.
GOP Arizona State Sen Wendy Rogers engaged yesterday with DeSantis’ press secretary Christina Pushaw yesterday over the situation
Rogers initially tweeted, “Trump would mop the floor with @GovRonDeSantis in 2024 – including in Florida. Take a lesson from Mike Pence – hero to zero in less than 24 hours.”
“DeSantis needs to get on board with President Trump NOW or will be seen as a Benedict Arnold & his political career will be over,” Rogers insisted.
In a response to a tweet that is no longer visible as the user’s tweets are now protected, Pushaw asked, “Whenever you see a corporate media narrative that doesn’t make sense and doesn’t provide evidence (such as the recent Trump/DeSantis narrative) ask yourself WHO BENEFITS?”
“Maybe she should ask herself that,” Pushaw added, apparently referencing Rogers.
Rogers reiterated her previous stance in a reply to Pushaw and declared, “All Ron has to do is say he will back Trump in 2024. Problem solved.”
