Earlier today, Governor of Oklahoma Kevin Stitt signed S.B. 612 into law. This law will make abortions criminal and illegal with limited exceptions in the state of Oklahoma.
The governor gave a quick speech before handing the microphone off to others in the room to say a few words. “I promised Oklahomans I would sign every Pro-life bill that hit my desk and that’s what we’re doing here today”
Stitt also pointed out that Oklahomans overwhelmingly support protecting the unborn. “We want Oklahoma to be the most Pro-life state in the country, we want to outlaw abortion in the state of Oklahoma.”
The bill will go into effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns in May. The governor and attorney general expect there to be legal challenges to the law.
Oklahoma Attorney General John O’Connor gave a brief speech at the signing declaring his job is the “public safety of all Oklahomans is our top priority… including our unborn children. Over 5,000 Oklahomans give their lives each year unwillingly to abortion with the consent of our government and we’re hoping for the day that that ends. Factually life begins at conception.”
“We know that in the Rov vs. Wade decision, there was no question that the life of the child in the womb was human, no question that the child was alive. The question was, could we parse words and say well the constitution just protects persons because it doesn’t say, humans. So, We are cautiously optimistic that the United States Supreme Court is going to pair that (Roe v. Wade) back.”
“We know that 60 plus million Americans have been denied the right to life because of the Roe vs. Wade and the Casey decisions and it’s about time that we end that tragedy in our nation’s history.”
O’Conner is one of 26 Attorney Generals who have asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs Wade. O’Conner added that he looks forward to defending this law.
With this law, anyone convicted of performing an abortion would face up to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. This law doesn’t authorize criminal charges against a woman who receives an abortion.
One of the authors of the law state Sen. Nathan Dahm said, “strongest pro-life legislation in the country right now, which effectively eliminates abortion in Oklahoma.”
Abortion rights activists are ready to bring challenges to the state’s law as the governor pointed out calling them people from the coasts during the signing of the bill.
With the Supreme Court expected to hand down a decision that may very likely overturn Roe vs. Wade states are moving to solidify legal stances on abortion. Many red states have recently passed legislation that would ban most abortions. While blue states are moving to make abortions legal to the point of birth as well as use state funding to cover the expense.
Many are calling the divide of the viewpoints on abortion a battle for the soul of our nation.
