Outgoing GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander Bails On Trump, Urges Him to ‘Put the Country First’ and ‘Help President-Elect Biden’

Outgoing Tennessee GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander issued a statement today urging President Trump to concede to Joe Biden following the Electoral College vote.

Echoing words that he used yesterday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Alexander told Trump that he lost the 2020 presidential election and needs to “put the country first.”

“The presidential election is over. States have certified the votes. Courts have resolved the disputes. The electors have voted,” Alexander began the statement.

Alexander then expressed that he “hopes” Trump “will put the country first, take pride in his considerable accomplishments, and help President-elect Biden get off to a good start.”

“Especially during this pandemic, an orderly transition of power is crucially important,” Alexander concluded, invoking the COVID-19 as a reason to stop challenging the results of an election that was radically reshaped to due to the virus.

Alexander’s replacement, GOP Senator-elect Bill Hagerty has stood by the president thus far. Last week, he retweeted a Trump tweet about the Texas SCOTUS election lawsuit and said, “Tennesseans stand by you, President Trump.”

Trump endorsed Hagerty to replace Alexander last July, tweeting “Tennessee loving Bill Hagerty, who was my Tennessee Victoy Chair and is now the very outstanding Ambassador to Japan, will be running for the U.S. Senate. He is strong on crime, borders & our 2nd A. Loves our Military & our Vets. Has my Complete & Total Endorsement!”
