Top Republicans on several committees are asking for answers from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) regarding security decisions made leading up to and on the day of the Jan. 6 siege on the Capitol, following the acquittal of former President Trump of impeachment.
Four ranking members of committees sent a letter to Pelosi today which said that “many important questions” about her “responsibility for the security” of the Capitol on Jan. 6 “remain unanswered.”
Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff Drew Hammill has called the Republicans’ letter a “transparently partisan attempt to lay blame on the Speaker, who was a target of assassination during the insurrection fueled by the lies of House Republicans, the Ranking Members are trying to absolve former Police Chief Sund, former Sergeant at Arms Stenger and the leader who appointed him, Mitch McConnell, of any responsibility.”
Hammill continued, “We look forward to these Ranking Members asking these same questions of former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.”
“As the target of an assassination attempt, the Speaker knows all too well the importance of security at the Capitol and is focused on getting to the bottom of all issues facing the Capitol Complex and the events that led up to the insurrection. Clearly, these Republican Ranking Members do not share this priority,” Hammill added.
Pelosi sent a letter of her own today to her Democratic Colleagues today, where she said Congress will establish an independent, 9/11-style commission to investigate the siege.
In the letter, Pelosi said that “It is clear from his findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened.”
“To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission to ‘investigate and report on the facts and causes relating to the January 6, 2021 domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex… and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement in the National Capitol Region,'” Pelosi insisted.
Journalist Michael Tracey suggested that “Corporate media desperately needs some kind of drawn-out ‘9/11-type commission’ with Trump as the main character — their entire business model is in severe jeopardy with him out of the picture.”
Tracey also sarcastically noted that “The 9/11 Commission took almost two years to complete — enjoy!”
