Pete Buttigieg Says His Connecting Flight Was Canceled While Discussing Compensation For Canceled Flights in a Tweet

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a tweet today that his connecting flight was canceled while discussing compensation for canceled flights.

Many responded by suggesting that he could perhaps, fix the problem instead, as the tweet was somewhat of a self-own for someone in his position.

“Sometimes an airline will offer you points or miles as compensation, but you are entitled to a cash refund when your flight is canceled.”

“When deciding whether to accept miles, it’s helpful to know their value, which varies, but often is estimated at 1 to 1.5 cents per mile.”

“For example, my connecting flight got canceled last night. At first, the airline offered 2500 miles, which I estimate is worth about 30 bucks.”

“But I claimed the refund for the canceled portion instead, and it worked out to be $112.07.”

“Airlines offer miles as compensation for some travel issues, and you can often negotiate on this. That’s between you and the airline.”

“But you are entitled to cash refunds for canceled flights – that’s a requirement that we will continue to enforce.”

Buttigieg then offered a website for those looking for more information to visit.

Twitter user Brian Jackson replied, “You know is the Secretary of Transportation you could maybe I don’t know fix the root cause of the delays so no one would need a refund and would actually get to their destination?”

“Hey Pete … maybe, as Secretary of Transportation, you should be meeting with FAA, major airlines and other key folk involved – slamming your fist on the table and demanding they work out these issues and a plan to address the problems … not update us on frequent flyer miles,” another Twitter user urged Buttigieg.

One Twitter user wondered, “Who are you, @thepointsguy or the Secretary of Transportation??”

According to Business Insider, more than 1,000 flights have been canceled over the Fourth of July weekend as travel chaos continues.

American Airlines, Delta, and United are among the carriers canceling flights, the publication reported.
