Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador criticized the criminal charges brought against former U.S. President Donald Trump at a press conference.
Obrador told reporters, “Supposedly legal issues should not be used for electoral, political purposes. That’s why I don’t agree with what they are doing to ex-President Trump.”
People across the world watched as Trump was arraigned on Tuesday for 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. This is the first time in U.S. history a former president has been charged criminally.
Obrador also compared Trump’s case of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office and arrested in Dember after he tried to dissolve Congress.
Obrador took office in 2018 and had a friendly working relationship with then-President Trump. Obrador also publically called for the reinstatement of Trump’s Twitter account in November of last year.
The case against Trump was brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who had earlier in his career said he was dropping the case, but has now managed to enable a grand jury to indict the former president.
We will see in time what comes of the 34 felony charges Trump is currently facing and if other world leaders condemn such chicanery in our view.
