Pride Month Promoting Missouri Teacher Loses Job Over Viral Video Where She Berates ‘Ignorant’ Student

A teacher in Springfield, Missouri is out of a job after a viral video showed her berating an “ignorant” student after he apparently questioned her decision to give students unicorn cupcakes promoting pride month.

According to Stephen Hall, the chief communications officer for the district, the female teacher “will not be returning to SPS.”

The video begins with the teacher, who has not been named publicly, in the middle of an explanation about a tray of the cupcakes she brought to share with students on the final day of class during the 2020-21 year, which was May 27th according to the school calendar.

It is unclear what the teacher said when she presented the treats or what the male student said to generate the explanation, but later in the video, she makes it clear that they were in support of pride month.

The Springfield News-Leader explained the video:

“Just because I support another thing doesn’t mean I don’t support straight people, too,” the teacher said at the start of the video. “Just because I’m Mexican doesn’t mean I don’t also support Black people or Irish people or ignorant people.”

The teacher gestured toward the questioning student when she said “ignorant people.”

The student said something about getting “ignored” and the teacher, opening one of the trays, asked: “Would you like a special unicorn cupcake for being straight, jerk?”

The student answered “yes” and the teacher, calling it a “straight jerk cupcake” walked to him with the tray. She called him “a pill.”

The student said he was trying to be annoying and she complimented him, saying that he had been “very successful.”

On her way back to the front of the classroom, the teacher appeared to say: “What a dip.” After the student asked what she said, the teacher explained: “A dip, like a dipstick, a butthead, a weasel, a pain in my butt.”

The teacher then explained that “This summer is LGBTQ month and I’m not going to see you and I wanted to give you something” while passing them out.

“Everybody is welcome to a unicorn cupcake,” she added, appearing to realize she had gotten too worked up as she concluded, “I just wanted to make sure there were enough for the people who wanted them.”
