Protesters Surround D.C. Mayor Bowser’s House Chanting ‘No Justice, No Sleep’ After Police Kill Suspect

Washington D.C. Mayor Bowser has been vocal in recent days, speaking out against President Trump and voicing approval of recommendations to rename historic buildings and monuments in the city.

She also allowed for a Black Lives Matter mural to be painted on a street and for it to be renamed “Black Lives Matter Plaza.”

None of that stopped protesters from coming to her house last night chanting, “no justice, no sleep” after a D.C. police officer killed a suspect, Deon Kay, who officers said was running from them and pulled out a gun.

From NBC Washington:

After protesters surrounded the Seventh District Police Station past midnight demanding the release of body-worn camera footage from the shooting, D.C. Police say they will release that video on Thursday.

Protests were reinvigorated not long after sunrise on Thursday.

Marchers organized by Sunrise Movement DC gathered around 6 a.m. Thursday and headed north along 16th Street NW, calling for D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham to be fired over the shooting.

The group rallied behind a banner reading “Fire Newsham” in large red letters. Other signs said, “defund or resign.”

“I’m a Black person living in this city. I’m tired of seeing people like me get murdered. I’m tired of the mayor not being accountable for it. I’m tired of, like, Peter Newsham and his gang of killer cops that are terrorizing the city,” one protester in a Black Lives Matter shirt said.

Once in front of Mayor Bowser’s home, the group chanted, “no justice, no peace” as police officers stood by.

Bowser hasn’t yet given a public comment on the shooting, drawing more criticism from protest groups that have for months said she hasn’t done enough on police reform.
