U.S. House Reps. Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Victoria Spartz (R-IN) have shared they do not support McCarthy’s removal of Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Mace told Axios in December that she was, “not going to support” McCarthy’s removal of Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Spartz has voiced her objection to Omar’s removal publicly. Spartz gave a statement saying, “Two wrongs don’t make a right. Speaker Pelosi took unprecedented actions last Congress to remove Reps. Greene and Gosar from their committees without proper due process. Speaker McCarthy is taking unprecedented actions this Congress to deny some committee assignments to the minority without proper due process again.”
McCarthy is planning to bring the removal of Omar from the House Foreign Affairs Committee to a vote likely next week. He vowed to have her removed from the committee before the midterm elections along with removing House Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA) from the Intelligence Committee.
In response to this Omar has said, “Whatever our disagreements might be as members of Congress, policy differences alone have not and must not be cause for eliminating someone from serving on a committee.”
Other Republicans support McCarthy’s effort to remove Omar. Rep. Mike Lawler told Axios, “Somebody like Ilhan Omar should not be serving on Foreign Affairs, especially with her stated positions with respect to the state of Israel. So I would absolutely vote to remove her.”
We will soon see if McCarthy can secure the votes to remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee or if she will keep her spot.
