Schumer Calls for End to ‘Historic Disenfranchisement’ After DC Statehood Bill Passes in House

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed today that “it is past time to end the historic disenfranchisement of hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens and make D.C. a state” after a bill designed to do that passed in the House of Representatives today.

The bill is unlikely to gain traction in the Republican-held Senate and was approved by a 232-180 vote, with no Republicans voting in favor of it.

If Democrats win control of the White House and Senate in November, while maintaining the House of Representatives, D.C. could get another shot at becoming a state next year.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer issued a series of tweets saying that he “was proud to preside over the historic House vote” and claimed that Democrats were “standing up for democracy, equal rights, and equal representation for all Americans.”

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a statement following the vote saying that she “was born without representation, but I swear – I will not die without representation. Together, we will achieve DC statehood, and when we do, we will look back on this day and remember all who stood with us on the right side of history.”

One Pro-Trump Twitter user said that he was ok with D.C. statehood – as long as they took Northern Virginia as well.
