With Democrats hanging Joe Manchin out to dry simply because he is refusing to go along with the Build Back Better legislation, Republicans in the senate are trying to woo him to their side as it would flip the majority.
Sen Ted Cruz (R-TX) said on Fox News on Monday while at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix, “A lot of folks ask, ‘Well, gosh, is Manchin going to become a Republican? I hope he does. I’ve asked him to. I think every Republican senator has made that case a dozen times to Joe.”
“I will say I think it’s a tough hill for him to climb. He’s just culturally- he’s a Democrat. He’s been a Democrat his whole life and he’s really the godfather of Democrats in West Virginia. So I get why switching parties, that’s hard. That being said, if they’re nasty enough, the best thing that could happen is they could drive him over to the Republican Party and we would welcome him,” Cruz explained.
Cruz’s fellow Texas Republican Sen John Cornyn told KXAN that he texted Manchin, “Joe if they don’t want you we do,” but hadn’t heard back.
In an interview that was reported today by the New York Times, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) asked, “Why in the world would they want to call him a liar and try to hotbox him and embarrass him?”
“I think the message is, ‘We don’t want you around.’ Obviously that is up to Joe Manchin, but he is clearly not welcome on that side of the aisle,” McConnell noted.
Yesterday, we reported that Manchin responded to the press release put out by the White House in response to his decision to not support the bill.
Manchin explained his view on the anger coming from the White House and other Democrats, “They figured, surely to God, we can move one person, surely we can badger and beat one person, that’s — surely we can get enough protesters to make that person uncomfortable enough. Well, guess what? I’m from West Virginia. I’m not from where they’re from, and they can just beat the living crap out of people and think they’ll be submissive. Period.”
