Locals Who Want to See The Number One Film in America Have to Drive Out of State or Pay Up to $36 to Cross a Toll Bridge
UPDATE: 6:50 PM: The Owner claims the theatre is booked up for a few weeks and that it’s not determined to be a political decision.
Well, it is the second weekend for the blockbuster hit movie that smashed October records, ‘Joker’. Controversial or not, everyone wants to know what this movie is about and people from all walks of life are going to see it. For one small-town region outside of Virginia Beach Virginia though, if you want to know what all the hype is about, your weekend plans just got a little bit more complicated.
A small town, one screen local movie theater called the Roseland Theatre is the only movie choice for people who live in a unique area called the Eastern Shore of Virginia. This area, which is made up of two counties, is separated from Virginia Beach and the rest of the state by an expensive and expansive bridge-tunnel to the south, and the Maryland-Delaware Peninsula to the north.
This leaves movie-goers with one choice to see the latest number one film on the big screen if they want to stay local. Usually, the Roseland Theatre plays many of the biggest hit movies, but it can’t show every movie, because of its schedule limits and the fact that there is only one theater. For this reason and the fact that they are a private company, they are indeed under no obligation to show any particular movie if they choose not to, for any reason they choose.
This being the case though, it’s odd that a small-town movie theater that operates as a non-profit and accepts donations to stay in business, would not want a chunk of the money pie that is the Joker movie. As of last weekend, according to IMBD, Joker is the number one film in America, blowing out any other movie including Downton Abbey by HUGE margins. This weekend the Roseland is showing “Downton Abbey’ and last weekend they played the kid’s movie “Abominable”. These are the number two and number three movies as of last weekend.

There has been some controversy about the Joker movie, as some were afraid that it might incite violence or perhaps it wasn’t politically correct enough for others, although so far the run has gone off without a hitch around the United States. This rings especially true in today’s ‘woke’ culture where political correctness has run rampant and often controls narratives in Hollywood, social media, and other major areas that affect American’s daily lives.
We contacted the owner of the small theater, to ask if they planned on showing the film and received an email response of “doubt it”, from the owner Scott Chandler. We sent a follow-up email asking if Scott Chandler, shown in the article’s featured image, would care to comment on why they aren’t playing the record-setting movie and if it was anything to do with politics.
Chandler’s Facebook page publicly shows that he is a consultant at the ‘Eastern Shore of VA 911 Commission’ and ‘Owner/President at Roseland Theatre’. Media Right News has yet to receive a response to the second question of why he doesn’t plan on showing the film, if we do, we will promptly update this article as soon as possible.

For full disclosure, there is one other small movie theater at the extreme north end of the region. We spoke with Lillian on the phone from ‘Island Theatre‘ in Chincoteague, Virginia. She stated they had no plans for showing the movie but requests can be made on their Facebook page and also stated others have made requests for the movie.
For now, if you’re one of the approximately 45,000 residents in the region and you want to see the number one movie in America, you will have to make big weekend plans (if you didn’t last weekend) and spend a lot more money, possibly due to simple political correctness.
