Friday Republican members U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R) and Rep. Chip Roy (R) of the House Oversight Committee sent a letter to the Chairman of the Oversight Committee, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D). This was in response to subpoenas issued to two Department of Homeland Security officials, without debate or bipartisan support, in fact, no consultation was made with any Republicans on the committee.
Thursday Cummings had made it ‘clear’ to the Republican minority members of the committee that he will abide with the bipartisan agreement regarding the issuance of subpoenas only when it is convenient for his partisan investigations. In a memorandum, Cummings sent to the oversight committee on Thursday justifying his partisan actions with, “the calendar does not permit scheduling a business meeting to hold a vote on this subpoena.”
Congress will reconvene Tuesday, which as the letter to Cummings states, gives an opportunity to hold a vote on the subpoena. The action taken by Cummings is described as an “abusive and unprecedented attack on the minority’s right to fundamental fairness and accountability ” in the letter.
Jordan and Roy close the letter with a respectful request that Cummings reconsider his approach to the subpoena and the investigation and convene a business meeting for debate and vote on the action.
